Malaria Prophylaxis
Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes. It is vital that all travellers identify any areas of risk for malaria before they leave and obtain reliable, up to date advice about prophylaxis.
Basic Principles
- Beware of the risk even if small - check for the latest advice on all the countries you are planning to visit
- Prevent mosquito bites especially at dusk - long-sleeved clothing, insect repellant, mosquito nets
- Use malaria prophylaxis correctly. We will advise you of the appropriate anti-malarial regime specific to the areas you are visiting. It is important that you take the medication correctly as some need to be started before you leave the UK and for a period of time after you depart the malarial area
Symptoms and Signs of Malaria
- People of all ages can contract malaria.
- Symptoms of malaria include fever and flu-like illness, including shaking chills, headache, muscle aches, and tiredness. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea may also occur.
- Malaria may cause anaemia and jaundice (yellow colouring of the skin and eyes).
- Infection with one type of malaria, Plasmodium falciparum, if not promptly treated, may cause kidney failure, seizures, mental confusion, coma, and death.
- Any traveller who becomes ill with a fever or flu-like illness whilst travelling and up to 1 year after returning home should immediately seek professional medical care.
- You should tell your doctor that you have been travelling in a malaria-risk area.
